Lithuanian Airports announces that since January, brand new, additional and automated defibrillators have been installed in the passenger terminals of Vilnius, Kaunas and Palanga airports. A total of 15 additional smart emergency devices have been installed and are available in the most crowded areas of the airport. Currently, there are 23 automated defibrillators at all Lithuanian Airports (passenger terminals).

According to health experts, these automated external defibrillators are smart and reliable computerized devices that provide audio-visual guidance to help you safely perform defibrillation, even if you don't have any special knowledge.

When the device is opened, the person hears audible and textual instructions on what to do and what the next resuscitation step should be. Once the electrodes are connected to the person in distress, the device itself analyses the heart activity, indicates whether defibrillation is needed and, if so, performs it.

“A good passenger experience at airports is a complex process in which passenger security is an important factor. Passenger health safety is very important to us, and we are well aware that for some passengers, air travel is not an everyday occurrence, and sometimes it is stressful and can lead to various conditions. In the event of cardiac dysfunction, cardiac arrest, a defibrillator can save lives. When this happens, every second counts, which is why we want to ensure that defibrillators are positioned so that they are easily and quickly accessible in different parts of the passenger terminals,” said Rasa Petraitienė, Head of Passenger Experience Management, Lithuanian Airports.

According to the representative of Lithuanian Airports, 7 additional defibrillators have been installed at Vilnius Airport, 4 at Kaunas Airport and 3 at Palanga Airport. A defibrillator has also been installed in the premises of the administration of Lithuanian Airports.

Although no special knowledge of the new devices is necessary, and they can be used by everyone, the employees of Lithuanian Airports will still receive additional information and training on the specifics of the defibrillators, their use and their ability to help passengers.

Lithuanian Airports, together with its partners, are also planning to conduct public training on the use of automated defibrillators in mid-February, specifically for passengers.

Defibrillators are designed to restore the heart's function when it stops suddenly. The device automatically analyses the situation and decides whether an electrical impulse is needed, including instructions in Lithuanian. It is impossible to harm a person with these defibrillators because the device itself collects all the necessary information.

It is essential to know the order of steps to provide help

Health experts remind that in the event of cardiac arrest people around shall take the following three actions:

  • Call for help as soon as possible by dialing 112 or inform the airport employees who will call for medical assistance.
  • Start closed-chest cardiac massage (100-120 times per minute) immediately and, if possible, combine massage with air injection in a 30:2 ratio.
  • While resuscitation is in progress bring an automated external defibrillator, switch it on and follow the defibrillator's commands to continue resuscitation until specialized help arrives.
