It is planned to implement the most modern system of registered baggage management and checking in the Baltic States for Vilnius Airport in the second part of the year 2024. The system applied exclusively to the departure terminal of Vilnius Airport will allow increasing the flow of customers being serviced, automating the majority of safety processes and at the same time reducing the risk of human faults by implementing the four-level system of examination of aviation safety.

The provided amount of the project makes up 8.65 mln. (excluding VAT), designing, application for special needs, implementation and later servicing works will be performed by Fima company with partners Daifuku Logan Ltd and Atea company with partners Rapiscan Ltd.

“Currently with implementers of technologies we are on the stage of designing the system of the current baggage management and examination system where we work closely with designers of the new terminal construction contractor, internal divisions and services of the airport in order the result to ensure needs of all parties concerned. The registered system of the baggage management and examination system that is the one of the most important technological solutions at this object will have a possibility to process 2400 baggage units per hour, and it means that the flow of passengers in comparison with the current situation will increase twice, so it is the main factor enabling Vilnius Airport to service more passengers”, -  states Giedrius Paulikaitis, the Head of the Aviation Development Department of the Lithuanian Airports.

According to the expert, apart from increase of passengers and flow of their baggage in the airport, one of new essential advantages of the system is that human faults are almost eliminated, so the safety level will significantly increase, the majority of processes will be automated, and also the new system will allow offering passengers new services which will be implemented simultaneously. It is stated that it will be one the most modern systems of baggage management and checking systems in the airports of the Baltic States.

Baggage will be checked in 3D format

As one of planned exclusiveness of the planned baggage management and examination system G. Pauliukaitis names that together with the baggage management system the most modern equipment for detection of explosives will be equipped, which will be able to analyze contents of baggage and provide an image in 3 D format. At the same time, it will be able to examine the baggage by means of four safety examination levels. Possibilities of that equipment will allow carrying out special procedures and applying automatic safety models in order to significantly reduce the risk of human faults during examination of transported items.

“It possible to state that the principle of operation of those innovative technologies will be similar to the equipment of nuclear magnetic resonance, tomography. Besides the equipment of detection of explosives that weights more than 13 tones, a totally new conveying and baggage sorting system of will be mounted, length of which will be about 1 kilometer. By means of that system the baggage will reach the way of examination from the place of registration very quickly and efficiently. It is also important to mention that during planning of that system the special emphasis has been put on safety and continuous operation by ensuring doubling opportunities, if required”, - G. Paulikaitis said.

Efficient baggage management: combination of complex systems

The energy-saving function will be implemented in the baggage management and examination system, baggage conveyors (specific plane area where the baggage has been put on) will be stopped if there is no baggage on them; and they will be automatically powered on if the baggage is put on a conveyor belt.

The system will allow adding 5 sorting carousels to certain registration tables where registration of baggage of from the certain flight is performed: baggage from the certain flight is added to the certain sorting carousel by means of a sorting distribution system (SAC).

The computing system (SCADA) will allow ensuring control of supervision of the new baggage management and examination system and collection of data. The baggage management and examination system will have screens (BIDS) in the sorting area where the condition of loading of baggage, a number of suitcases to be loaded, a number of loaded suitcases, a number improperly sorted or too early put suitcases, will be represented/recorded. All these main systems will ensure that the baggage given will not be lost and reach flights at a stated time.

Self-service possibilities will become available

According to G. Paulikaitis, the new system will provide new possibilities for offering other innovation – self-service terminals for the registered baggage. Passengers will give their baggage personally, and later it will be checked through the system and loaded into planes. It is stated that it will help to save time not only for airport operations, but also it will be more convenient for customers.

The luggage management and examination system works are planned to be implemented in the second part of the year 2024.

We remind that currently construction of a new departure terminal is taking place in Vilnius Airport; the terminal should start operating in the beginning of the year 2025.
