Duty Free Stores of the Vilnius Airport to Undergo a Major Overhaul

Vilnius Airport has signed a new lease agreement with duty-free store operator Gebr. Heinemann SE & Co and Travel Retail Vilnius which are currently operating at the airport on the basis of joint activity. They won a public tender for the rent of commercial duty-free premises, as well as the construction and operation of duty-free stores. In February, the waiting area and trading facilities’ premises at the Departures Terminal will undergo renovation. By July, passengers will be able to enjoy even a greater choice of goods, a more comfortable store layout, and their innovative interior design.

The tender for the new duty-free shop operator was announced at the end of October 2017. German company Gebr. Heinemann SE & Co operating at the airport on the basis of joint activity with a subsidiary UAB Travel Retail Vilnius won the tender in Vilnius and is the current duty-free shop operator at Kaunas Airport.

On 1 February, previous lease agreements with UAB Travel Retail Vilnius and other smaller shop owners that trade on the commercial premises of 1,400 sq. metres and overall represent 14 various-sized shops will expire.

“The winner was chosen based on the highest quality, experience and capacity standards. The new contract with Gebr. Heinemann SE & Co and Travel Retail Vilnius was concluded regarding the rent of six stores for the term of six years. In total, the company will manage the commercial area of 1,500 sq. meters at the Departures Terminal and will employ 63 employees.

Soon the airport’s trading premises will change dramatically and six newly renovated stores will offer a variety of goods ranging from cosmetics, tobacco and alcohol to accessories, jewellery and gourmet food,” says Jūratė Baltrušaitytė, Director of Commerce at Lithuanian Airports.

On 1 February, a major overhaul of commercial premises will take place. Vilnius Airport is planning to invest 1.9 million euros in the renovation works. As a part of the renovation, most of the Departure Terminal premises located behind the passenger check area will be redesigned. Other works include the installation of new flooring and elevators and an upgrade of the indoor lighting and engineering networks. The new duty-free store operator will invest additional 3.8 million euros into the store interior design, furniture and trading equipment.

One of the major changes in the new renovation is the establishment of the new walk-through duty-free store which will occupy 800 sq. meters. Its design was inspired by the ideas taken from the world’s largest and most modern airports. The store should be open to customers in July while other renovation works will continue until the end of the year.

The central walk-through store will offer an impressive selection of authentic Lithuanian souvenirs. It will also offer a unique range of textile products which represent Lithuania, accessories created by Lithuanian designers and others. A wide selection of products designed by Lithuanian artists will also be available at the store located outside of the Schengen waiting area.

Jūratė Baltrušaitytė believes that the new concept of the walk-through store will give customers a chance to conveniently find a great range of their favourite duty-free products in one place leading to greater customer satisfaction.
